The article linked above highlights a phenomenon that I documented while doing fieldwork in San Miguel (The Gringa: IRM and the Boomer generation)--that some Americans were traveling to Mexico for affordable health care. This article from earlier this year highlights some of the same issue--the major difference being that now an annual policy with the national health system in Mexico has raised to a whopping $330 (from 300 three years ago).
I revisit this issue today because The Jon Stewart Show ran a segment on this trend on November 30 (the second segment of the show).
Although there is no prohibition for Americans or others who wish to purchase insurance in the Mexican national system, one has to wonder how many Gringos their system can accommodate before it is overwhelmed. I also have to wonder how long the American public can live in denial that we also need a comprehensive system with a public option.
